Green Technology

New technology
has it’s ups and downs.  There is a large gap between established science and commercial success.  KES has been part of trying to help develop recycling technologies and renewable energy systems since we first started as Kemper Imageering.  Our first patent was a partnership in Ireland to develop a Municipal Solid Waste recycling process that refined the waste stream into a feed stock for energy generation after separating out what could be reclaimed.  While that project has been in various stages of development and financing, we have never stopped trying to find ways to use technology to improve our use of energy and materials.  One of our current partnering efforts is with Novum Dynamics to develop a novel steam engine that has potential to have greater efficiency than many conventional IC engines.

One of our successes was helping Sidewinder Pumps develop a solar-powered pump to enhance the safety and reliability of pipelinesSolar power for mechanical devices is generally not about the solar voltaic cells as much as it is optimizing the mechanical requirements to minimize the power draw on the battery.  We partnered with Sidewinder Pump’s technical team and helped them develop a highly successful product.  KES provides the technical expertise to support our client’s in-depth knowledge of their market and requirements.

In response to the Deepwater Horizon disaster, KES was hired by a US firm to provide a 3rd party review of a potential oil booming solution for rapid, light-weight, ecologically friendly oil spill containment for a Canadian company.  After conducting field tests in Port Fourchon, Louisiana in the actual oil spill coming ashore, we developed deployment and recover systems to provide a full solution at our own expense.  As Louisiana residents, we were more worried about the oil spill and its effect on our communities than whether or not we were getting paid.   Our efforts paid off with being selected as one of 15 projects out of thousands submitted to BP Oil to present their solution in Orange Beach, Alabama along with our report.  While we met all of the criteria, by the time the assessments were complete the immediate need was gone.   The Canadian company ceased operations but we have continued to develop the concept including methods for subsurface oil spill capture as well as beach and marsh clean up.  Our report was directly cited in a patent for all of their claims.

We  assist clients in many ways.  Some projects have been troubleshooting technology bottlenecks, where a team needed outside help for just one issue to work their way through the rest.  Other projects have been to provide independent 3rd party assessments of systems that make miraculous claims which sounds acceptable to a layperson.  Unfortunately, the dire need our society has for new or more efficient ways to generate energy can be opportunities for scam artists.  More often, however, it’s been people who develop a device or system that gives favorable results but, since the group lacked the detailed engineering capabilities, either misread the results or did not understand issues regarding scale.  Our services include:

  • Third party independent reviews and validations
  • Weight and mechanical power optimization
  • Material handling and sorting
  • Improving flow and heat transfer efficiencies
  • Electrical power and electro-magnetism modeling
  • Partnering in grass roots developments

KES continues to be committed to supporting better, more ecologically sound energy solutions as well as improving efficiencies and sustainability.  This ranges from more energy efficient devices, more reusable materials in equipment, reducing waste, and finding ways to field solar and wind power in applications or locations that have not been best used in the past.   We will continue to give special pricing consideration to supporting potential innovations in green technologies.
