Bart Kemper, P.E. presented, Evolving Methods for Design by Analysis for Glassy Polymers in Marine Applications, which he co-authored with Jarl Stromer of Triton Submarines as part of a larger “codes and standards” track at the 2023 Offshore Technology Conference, held in Houston, Texas May 1-4. The paper presented ongoing development in “design by analysis” for submarines, which is a safe, reliable method, grounded in Verification and Validation, to go outside the letter of the various codes such as ASME Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy and still be accepted by Classification Societies such as the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV). Using “design by analysis” will be key in developing new work-class submarines as an alternative to commercial diving or using Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).
The track was titled, “Towards the implementation of Unified Standards in the Digital Age.” It was part of a successful session by excellent speakers showed industrial responsibility addressing lower carbon, safety/reliability/cost, offshore wind, standardization deployment, digital solutions etc. amongst Industry stakeholders by ongoing collaborations within Standardization Organizations, Industry JIPs, operators and suppliers. The key take-away from the panel is the vital role codes and standards have in developing safe, reliable, and sustainable technology needed for offshore wind and other platforms as well as subsea operations.
