Kemper Engineering Service’s leadership attended the 24th Louisiana Joint Engineering Societies Conference (JESC) 29-30 January, 2020 in Lafayette, Louisiana.  Bart Kemper PE,  principal engineer and VP Engineering, has been supporting the JESC from its conception and helped organize the first five JESCs and had presented 6 times prior to this event.  Company president Krista Kemper has attended serveral.  This was a first for Rashmi Venugopal, the company’s VP for Business Development.  KES was one of this year’s conference sponsors.

The JESC is sponsored by the Louisiana Engineering Society as a way to serve all engineers, regardless of discipline.   There are four tracks with different concentrations, including one track for the business of engineering.  While the Professional Engineers receive Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for each session attended, the intent is to educate and inform across disciplines as well as address issues common to the profession.  Every member of the KES team was able to find meaningful sessions thanks to the hard work of the LES in developing a quality program.  We also enjoyed the LES Awards Luncheon where the society’s annual awards were presented along with various scholarships.

Bart spoke at the JESC for his 7th time.  In this instance, he was wearing his has at Vice President of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers, giving the topic “Introduction of Forensic Engineering and the National Academy of Forensic Engineers.”   People who are Professional Engineers are over half-way through the requirements for board certification as a forensic engineer.  Forensic engineering is one of the few board certifications available to engineers.  Bart outlined what forensic engineers do, how NAFE helps Professional Engineers become proficient as expert witnesses and technical investigators, and what NAFE membership entails.

Bart also ducked out to run over to the University of Louisiana-Lafayette (ULL) to give his lecture, “Introduction to Engineering Codes and Standards.”  He speaks at ULL at least once a semester and generally gives this talk to show the engineering students how engineering standards are a key tool in reliability and safety.
