Krista Kemper was invited as a special attendee to moderate an international panel of industry leaders for a special session at the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineering (IISE) 2023 Conference, held in New Orleans, La. May 18-21. The panel was on Monday, May 19. Unlike many public speaking appearances by KES where we are speaking as a member, no one in the team is a member of the IISE. Krista was invited based on her work with the National Society of Professional Engineer’s task group on Software Certification and the new Emerging Technologies Committee, plus her long involvement in codes & standards committees. Krista used her prior experience in Software Quality Assurance and in setting up testing facilities to help frame the discussion, which led to some direct conversations with audience members during Questions and Answers. Bart Kemper was a member of the panel.
Panel description: Industry Leaders’ perspective and outlook of systems and software engineering for the industrial engineering community
Many systems today are enhanced and modified digitally while being integrated into physical systems in our world. A panel of experts will share their history and perspectives of the future. Digital modernization includes critical principles and terms such as artificial intelligence, software factory, DevSecOps, open-source software and technical debt. Not only are digital systems and tools impacting our end products, the design and implementations require a holistic and comprehensive approach.
Change warrants the way we think about systems. Systems and software engineering have become a prerequisite to deal with emerging and innovative technologies. The road to digitization is being embedded into our defense, infrastructure, and control systems. The basic principles, methods, and laws that engineers apply are essential. Accidents and fatalities have already occurred with improper fundamentals outside of the engineers’ purview and oversight. Critical aspects of these systems require prevention, isolation and remediation of errors, mistakes, attacks and breaches. This is an expectational and unique opportunity to hear from leaders in industry dealing with realities and opportunities of our world and profession.
