The ASME Pressure Vessels for Human Occupancy (PVHO) codes and standards committee met in San Diego, California as part of their 3-times-a-year week-long conference to update and advance the codes and standards for medical hyperbaric chambers, submarines, diving systems, crewed tunnel boring machines, and other PVHO applications. These meetings bring various leaders in industry, government, research, and private practice together to address challenges while holding paramount public safety, health, and welfare. Bart Kemper continued in his duties as Chair for the Viewports subcommittee and the Design By Analysis for Glassy Polymers task group.
The highlight of the trip was a tour of the US Navy’s Undersea Rescue Command (URC) at Navy Base Coronado. Longtime PVHO member Tom Galloway, a senior member of the US Navy’s ocean engineering department, was the project manager and design architect for the current rescue system. This rapidly deployable system includes a remotely operate rescue submersible, docking systems for submarines, and decompression chambers to address the issues of pressurization and smoke typical in submarine emergencies.
