John Weaver, P.E. is not only one of KES’s consultants, he is also an alumni advisor to the mechanical engineering program at University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL). He invited Bart Kemper, P.E. and Linda Cross, E.I back to ULL to give a presentation to Prof. Yonas Niguse’s Senior Project engineering course.
One of the first things young engineers are encouraged to learn is “do not re-invent the wheel.” Learning theory is important, but so is learning what works. Engineering codes and standards are a good starting point for “what right looks like.” This is something that is often left to their first job as there are hundreds of codes — too many to teach in university. This presentation was to introduce how using these codes and standards can simplify their projects and put them on a path to success.
Volunteering is one of the ways we give back to our community and our profession. In addition to giving the class, we make ourselves available to the students throughout the year.
