Our principal engineer, Bart Kemper P.E., has been inducted as a Diplomate Member of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers. The admissions process includes many requirements and results in him being a Board Certified Forensic Engineer. Bart is now held to a higher standard and has access to additional resources and training. These additional resources will not only enhance our work in helping resolve legal disputes, it gives us more insight into legal pitfalls to be designed out or warned against.
Legal work is a small but important part of what KES does. In many ways it is done in the same spirit as our volunteer time with different professional organizations as well as in developing Codes & Standards. It is how we participate in the greater community. Our work with ASME and LES/NSPE gives us various community programs and mentorships as well as interaction with legislatures regarding engineering issues. Codes & Standards provide the framework for safe, reliable work. Legal work ensures that if a citizen has a legal dispute involving technical matters, they will have accurate, ethical professional opinions regardless of the legal theory in play.
Most expert witness projects do not go to court. In many ways, those are the most successful ones as the professional opinions brought the legal teams to agree upon the same outcome. Once in court, having the facts on your side does not always mean you win. In many situations each side presents feasible, reasonable, and technically supported theories. We do our part by giving the same honest, accurate professional opinions for court as we do in industry, regardless if the answer is what a client prefers to hear.
Bart’s inclusion into the NAFE will help KES be more effective in not only legal work but helping our clients avoid legal issues.
